An Investigation of Five Component [3+2] Self-Assembled Cage Formation Using Amidinium···Carboxylate Hydrogen Bonds

The assembly of hydrogen bonded cages using amidinium···carboxylate bonding interactions was investigated. A new tris-amidinium bond donor tecton based on a tetraphenylmethane scaffold prepared and its self-assembly with the terephthalate anion studied, tricarboxylate acceptor synthesised 1,3-benzenebis(amidinium) explored. In both cases, molecular modelling indicated that formation geometrically feasible 1H NMR spectroscopic evidence consistent between components in competitive d6-DMSO solvent mixtures. DOSY spectroscopy systems diffuse at same rate as each other, diffusion coefficients were cage formation, assemblies significantly larger than individual components. An X-ray crystal structure showed one did not have desired solid state.
